today's a first for me on cooking 2 of the most common if not the easiest dishes common to Filipino household : Menudo and Tinolang Manok.
I've grew up eating them at home every once in a while but it's always been cooked by either my aunt or lola (during my younger years, hehe). I think around last year my sisters had their chance in cooking those 2 dishes, good for them, but bad for me. I wasn't able to ask them or my aunt or lola how to cook! haha... and so, our menu ealier for lunch was supposed to be the menudo. since i've got no idea how to start cooking it, i just know tossing them all and pouring over them tomato sauce and water and let them cooking while boiling. haha... so, i searched over the net on how to cook menudo. i found one blog about easy cooking and viola! my very first menudo for lunch. i learned that i just need to sauteed onions with oil, cook in the meat, let it boil with the tomato sauce and water, put in the carrots and then the potatoes (but have to fry the potatoes first to avoid it being mashed later on, but i guess my mom's right, mashing the potatoes depends on how you stir the food) anyway, the outcome's ok, i think... haha... ooohhhh.... may i just share that the menudo i grew up at home is not the typical recipe? the usual menudo's main ingredients are : pork or any meat i guess, liver, hotdog, carrots and potatoes. but at our house, it consists of : pork, chicken, carrots and potatoes. hehe... but they're just the same.. i guess..
then comes chicken tinola cooking for dinner, i guess this one's easier. i just sauteed ginger in oil, tossed in the chopped chicken, let it boil, dropped in some broth cubes for flavor, tossed in the sayote when it boiled, let it boil some more and when the veggies are tender, dropped in the dahon ng sili and it's done! haha...
so, my learning today? don't cook when you're feeling sick! especially when you have colds or clogged nose (like me). i had a hard time knowing if the food tastes ok coz my tastebuds are not working! waaahhhh!!!!! anyway.. just have someone try your dish. haha... instead of attempting to season it with anything or everything. that'll be bad.. i tell you... haha... happy cooking !
